February 2013, food Drug and Administration has approved Kadcyla, a new therapy for patients with HER2-positive, late-stage breast cancer. HER-2 is a protein found in cancer cells. As with all other medication, there are possible serious side effects of Kadcyla. The Kadcyla serious side effects are rare and have been reported in 1 to 2 percent of the treated patients. Kadcyla medication may also cause severe problems to your liver that can be life-threatening. The sign and symptoms of the liver problems include pain or swelling in the stomach; unusual and unexplained fatigue, dark colored urine and loss of appetite. Patients may also suffer from jaundice, a disease characterized by yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. Consult your doctor if your skin has turned yellow or any of the above symptoms persists.
Kadcyla, a combination drug is made up of the antibody, trastuzumab, and chemotherapy, DM1. The medication may cause severe problems in your heart. The heart problems may occur without any symptoms such as reduced heart function and with symptoms such as congestive heart failure. The sign and symptoms of congestive heart failure include swelling of the ankles or legs, shortness of breath, cough, or rapid weight gain of greater than 5 lbs in less than 24 hours. Immediately seek medical attention if any of the above symptoms persist.
Kadcyla should not be used in pregnancy without the prior consent of your doctor. Several clinical trials have shown that the drug may cause the death of an embryo and birth defects. Women using Kadcyla are advised to use birth control during the treatment and for 6 months after your last dose of Kadcyla. A breastfeeding mother should consult the doctor before using Kadcyla medication for the treatment of breast cancer.
Constipation, difficulty in bowel movement is the common side effect associated with Kadcyla medication. During breast cancer, women eating habits changes and they are physically less active. Women may be in pain, feel week and uncomfortable. All the conditions cause constipation. It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids and eat fiber-rich food along with regular exercise. This side effect is mild but if severe conditions persist, contacts your healthcare provider immediately.
People taking Kadcyla may also experience nausea, a sick feeling in your stomach that makes you feel like you have to vomit. Symptoms may be mild or severe. Signs and symptoms of mild nausea include loss of appetite. The severe side effect symptom includes vomiting. Discontinuation of Kadcyla medication may give some relief from the symptoms. It is advisable to consult your doctor before discontinuing Kadcyla medication for the treatment of breast cancer.
Women taking Kadcyla for the treatment of breast cancer may also experience a problem in the lungs, as one of the side effects. The signs and symptoms of this life-threatening side effect include trouble breathing, cough, tiredness, and fluid in the lungs. Remember that your doctor has prescribed you this medication as he/she judged that the benefits of the drug outweigh the risk. Inform your doctor if you are experiencing any such life-threatening side effects.
