Dotarem has been recently approved by food drugs and administration for in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, spine and associated tissues of children and adults. Like most other medicine and diagnostic agent, Dotarem side effects do occur in some people. Side effects are usually mild and long-lasting. Side Effects of Dotarem
Site of Injection
The most common injection site reactions include pain at the site of injection, local swelling, erythema (redness of the skin), tenderness and pruritus (a sensation that causes a desire to scratch). According to a clinical trial, pain at the injection site occurred in 0.2 per cent of the treated patients. However, coldness at the injection site occurred only in 0.2 per cent of the treated patients. It is not necessary that the side effects occur with every injection. To minimize the side effects of injection site reaction it is important to follow the proper technique for administration.
Cardiac Side Effects
The cardiac side effects of Dotarem injection include bradycardia, tachycardia (heart rate that exceeds the normal range), and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Bradycardia is a condition in your heart beats at an abnormally slow rate and your body does not get enough oxygen from your bloodstream. The adult person when in a relaxing condition has a heart rate of 60 to 100 heartbeat per minute. Bradycardia persists when heart rate is lower than 60 beats per minute. A person suffering from bradycardia will feel fatigued, dizzy or fainting. Consult your doctor in case of a severe medical condition.
Acute Kidney Injury
People taking Dotarem medication may suffer from an acute kidney injury that in turn may require dialysis. Patients with chronically reduced renal function are at a higher risk of getting acute kidney injury due to Dotarem. It is advisable to start first with the lowest dose of Dotarem.
People taking Dotarem may also experience nausea, a sick feeling in your stomach that makes you feel like you have to vomit. Symptoms may be mild or severe. According to clinical trials, nausea has been reported in 0.6 per cent of the Dotarem treated patients. Sign and symptoms of mild nausea include loss of appetite. Severe side effect symptom includes vomiting. Discontinuation of Dotarem injections may give some relief from the symptoms. It is advisable to inform your health care provider about all the side effects experienced by you after taking Dotarem injection.
According to clinical trials, a headache occurs rarely in Dotarem treated patient and has been reported on 0.5 per cent of the treated patients. Your doctor may prescribe a pain reliever for the treatment of headache. Your headache will be gone once the body gets adjusted to the new medication.
Immune System Disorder
Recent studies have shown that Dotarem injection may have an adverse effect on your immune system. People administered Dotarem injection may have a weak immune system i.e. their body is strong enough to find with outside infections. Symptoms associated with the immune system include hypersensitivity (undesirable reactions produced by the normal immune system) reactions including swelling on the pharynx and eyelids, blue or purplish colouration of skin due to lack of oxygen, and increased sweating.
