Chantix Side Effects

Emotional Side Effects

According to Pfizer, 9 to 13 percent of the patient taking Chantix may experience psychiatric side effects of abnormal dreams. Apart from that sleep disorders and nightmares are reported in 2 percent of patients.

Patients may also show mild symptoms such as anxiety, emotional disorder, irritability, restlessness, aggression, agitation, mood swings, abnormal thinking, depression, psychotic disorder, suicidal ideation, and erratic behavior.

Chantix medication may also reverse the previous symptoms of depression or other mental health issues. These types of side effects with other changes in behavior s not typical for an individual and should be reported to the healthcare provider. Your doctor might ask you to stop the medication immediately.

Allergic and Skin Reactions

Chantix rarely causes any serious allergic reactions. However, it is advisable to contact a dermatologist in case of severe swelling in the mouth face and throat. Other life-threatening skin reactions include rash, skin peeling or blisters in the mouth.

The side effect of nausea was reported in clinical trials as mild to moderate in intensity. However, some people experience persistent nausea during treatment.

Chantix medication is usually prescribed by Pfizer for12 weeks but can be extended for 24 weeks according to the requirement of the patient. The short term usage of Chantix medication results in mild side effects.

However, severe side effects have only been reported after long term use of dug. Mild side effects of Chantix medication include headache; dry mouth or unpleasant taste in mouth; stomach pain, gas; Constipation; weakness or feeling of being tired; or nausea which may persist for several months. Among all the side effects, nausea has been frequently reported in 30 percent of patients treated with Chantix medication.

Other Adverse Side Effects

Chantix medication may also cause adverse side effects which immediately seek the attention of health care providers. The drug may cause chest pain or pressure which is accompanied by tight feelings in patients’ neck or jaw with the pain spreading to arms or shoulders. Other life-threatening symptoms include unusual bleeding with blood in urine or stool. You may also cough blood while vomiting. Patients may also experience severe headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance.

Withdrawal

Doctors prescribe Chantix to patients who want to get rid of their smoking habits. The drug is free from nicotine and in order to reverse the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, the drug itself causes severe withdrawal symptoms on discontinuing it.

Chantix discontinuation may itself cause side effects such as trouble in sleeping, frustration, anger, nausea, vomiting; confusion; emotional instability, difficulty in concentrating, restlessness, increased appetite or weight gain.
